Tuesday 30 June to Monday 6 July 2009  - Thanks for the various comments we've received on video playing speed.  This week we conduct a bit of an experiment.  The first video uses our usual player "Vimeo" but, the second video uses "You Tube".  Test them both out and let us know which one was fastest for you.  If 'You Tube" is fastest for most people we'll look to switch to it as our main player.  All the best for a great week.

Quote of the week:

There are two kinds of people, those who finish what they start and so on

Suzanne Aubert, who might just turn out to be New Zealand's first saint, has the following advice for the week ahead:

Tuesday - he who prays is, at that same moment, rewarded

Wednesday - perfect obedience..contains all our duties

Thursday - God measures our trials because he knows the measure of our free will to accept them

Friday - happiness and misfortune are God's messengers

Saturday -  God alone knows where he guides us

Sunday - derive our confidence from the sentiments of our lowliness and unworthiness

Monday - his mercy surpasses all our iniquities when we repent of them

Surviving the winter

Before you go an item from www.methodist.org.nz:

The banana is the most popular fruit in the world, with people spending over $25 billion a year on it.  The banana trade is the fifth largest in agriculture produce - after cereals, sugar, coffee and cocoa.
The industry is dominated by a small number of multinational corporations with large scale plantations and control of the markets and prices.  Small farmers struggle to cover production costs and the majority of banana plantations are not paid enough to support their families.  Many earn less than $3 a day.

Fair trade can help change this.  It guarantees minimum prices that cover average local costs of production.  This can average local costs of production.  This can be double what producers normally receive.  Fair trade gives producers the security of long term contracts , improved working conditions, investment in the local community and environmentally sustainable farming methods.

There are 57 certified Fairtrade banana producers based in Latin America, the Caribbean and West Africa.  They supply Fairtrade bananas to 20 countries.  The New Zealand Fair Trade Association wants to make that 21 and give consumers in New Zealand the chance to buy bananas more ethically.

To join the campaign contact CWS for 'banana demand cards' to take to your local supermarket, email the major supermarket chains (details are on the CWS website) or speak to you supermarket manager.
